What is a transport cart / material trolley?

Transport carts and material trolleys are the central element of intralogistics for the provision and intermediate storage of goods. They are mostly characterised by a compact and robust design and have wheels (e.g. swivel casters) that are adapted to the load as well as to the place of use.

In industrial production, material transport with route and trailer systems based on the MILKRUN PRINCIPLE is becoming increasingly popular and is now replacing conventional transport methods such as forklift trucks in many cases. Milkrun is a concept of procurement logistics to provide material according to demand. The concept is based on the basic idea that material is only replenished in the quantity that has been consumed. This ensures that the right material ends up at the right workplace at the right time.

For an optimal transport, not only the bridging of distances, but also an optimal storage of goods plays an important role. Aspects such as transport safety bring additional requirements to the design of a transport cart.

Components of a transport cart

Since carts and especially tugger trailers are often subjected to higher stresses and heavy loading, high-quality square pipe systems are used in most cases. In addition to extraordinary stability and individual storage capacity, these offer a high degree of flexibility.

When designing a material trolley, you can choose from a wide range of accessories. Special fixed or swivel castors make the cart mobile without negatively affecting the load-bearing capacity. Special panels (e.g. BEESave), fabric compartments or cladding provide optimum protection for your components during transport. We also offer drawbar and coupling systems that are compatible with common tugger trains.

Often the entire cart does not have to be made of square profiles to ensure stability. A square base frame forms a strong foundation that can be transformed into pipe racking systems via special joint elements. In this way, the advantages of both worlds can be combined.

Tugger trailers for large load carriers such as pallets

In some cases, so-called shooter solutions are suitable. For example, material trolleys can be pushed up to a shelf, which activates an unlocking mechanism and the containers start moving automatically. This can drastically reduce the time needed for loading and unloading. The prerequisite for this is the use of roller rails.
